Today’s Guests:
On this episode of Water Talk, Paul Dowding, Owner of Water Pro’s Paul the Waterman shares some insights on what is going on at water treatment plants, and then explains his concerns on the quality of our drinking water. Water treatment plants use a variety of chemicals, including disinfectants like chlorine and chloramine, coagulants such as alum and ferric chloride to clump particles together, and pH adjusters like sodium hydroxide or sulfuric acid to control acidity. Other common chemicals include activated carbon to remove impurities and scale and corrosion inhibitors like phosphates to protect pipes. The big question is how are these chemical effecting our health and the quality of our drinking water. Unregulated contaminants are not tested. There is no exact number for all unregulated contaminants, as the number is constantly evolving, but at least 160 contaminants lack legal limits in U.S. tap water, and over 97 million people have been exposed to some unregulated contaminants.
