Colorado Mobile Home Water Quality Act: What Residents Need to Know!! On this edition of Water Talk, Host Scott Whatley is joined by Paul “The Waterman” Dowding of Water Pro’s to discuss an important issue for Colorado’s mobile home residents: drinking water quality.
Colorado has established a Mobile Home Park Water Quality program designed to identify and address potential water-quality problems in mobile home parks. Recent legislation gives the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment additional authority to require testing, remediation plans, and corrective action when water-quality concerns are identified. Scott and Paul discuss an important question for residents: Who is responsible for the quality of the water coming into a mobile home park, and what happens when testing reveals a problem?
The conversation explores potential contaminants including bacteria, lead, nitrates and PFAS, while emphasizing that different contaminants require different testing and treatment methods. Paul also explains why residents should understand the difference between water quality at the park level and what may happen to that water as it travels through the plumbing inside an individual home.
The discussion also focuses on what residents can do to become more informed. Residents should know where their water comes from, when it was last tested, what contaminants were tested for, and whether any problems were identified. They can also ask to see the actual laboratory results. Another important takeaway is that residents shouldn’t automatically purchase a water filter simply because they’re concerned about their water. The first step is understanding what, if anything, is actually in the water.
Different contaminants require different treatment technologies, and a water softener, for example, is designed primarily to address hardness—not every potential drinking-water contaminant.
The goal of the Colorado program is to identify problems and make sure appropriate action is taken. For residents, the message is simple: don’t guess about your water. Know where it comes from, know whether it has been tested, understand the results, and know what steps are available if a problem is found.
