Then, on this edition of Medicare & More, Scott Whatley is joined by Jim Garey, an independent Medicare broker and owner of Silver Sherpa, to discuss an important question for anyone approaching Medicare eligibility: When should you begin planning, and when should you call Jim?
Jim explains that Medicare timing can be confusing, especially for people who continue working beyond age 65. While some individuals enroll in Medicare when they first become eligible, others remain covered through an employer’s group health insurance. The right decision can depend on the size of the employer, the type of coverage available and individual circumstances, so understanding the rules before making a change is essential. The conversation also addresses what can happen when someone works past 65, stays on employer coverage and is unexpectedly laid off at age 68. Jim explains why it is important to act quickly, review available enrollment opportunities and avoid gaps in health coverage. Losing employer-sponsored insurance may create a Special Enrollment Period, but deadlines and requirements matter. Calling a knowledgeable Medicare professional as soon as employment or coverage changes can help ensure the transition is handled properly.
Jim encourages listeners not to wait until the last minute. Reaching out before turning 65, before retiring or whenever employer coverage may end can provide time to review options and prepare the necessary paperwork. He can help clients understand Medicare Advantage Plans, Medicare Supplement Plans and prescription drug coverage, while reviewing choices at no cost to the client. Also, if a Spouse is on the other spouses work insurance and they are not eligible for Medicare, Jim can assist with Health Insurance.
