Today’s Guests:
On this edition of Water Talk, brought to you by Water Pro’s, host Scott Whatley and Paul “The Waterman” Dowding tackled an important and often overlooked topic: disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in our drinking water and their potential impact on human health.
Disinfection byproducts are chemical compounds that can form when disinfectants such as chlorine or chloramine, which are used to kill harmful bacteria and viruses in municipal water supplies, react with naturally occurring organic matter in the water. While disinfection has played a critical role in protecting public health, researchers have spent decades studying the possible health effects associated with long-term exposure to certain disinfection byproducts.
During the program, Paul explained that some of the most studied DBPs, including trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs), have been linked in scientific studies to an increased risk of certain health concerns when exposure occurs over many years at elevated levels. Potential concerns that have been investigated include increased risks of bladder cancer, reproductive and developmental issues, and possible effects on the liver, kidneys, and nervous system.
Paul emphasized that consumers should not panic, but rather become informed about their water quality and understand the treatment options available to reduce exposure. The discussion highlighted the importance of testing, education, and advanced water treatment technologies, such as activated carbon filtration and reverse osmosis systems, which can help reduce many disinfection byproducts found in drinking water. As always, Water Pro’s offers a free in-home water test to help families better understand and improve the quality of their drinking water. Call 303-862-5554, tell them Scott sent you.
