In our last half hour, it’s Your Health Matters with Dr. Perry Maynard. In this interview, Dr. Perry Maynard of Integrated Health Systems explains what many patients are never told about hypothyroidism—that the most common cause is not a nutrient deficiency, but an autoimmune condition called Hashimoto’s disease. Hashimoto’s accounts for roughly 90% of hypothyroid cases in the U.S. and occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid, disrupting hormone production. This can lead to classic hypothyroid symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, dry skin, and hair loss, but may also cause hyperthyroid symptoms like anxiety, insomnia, heart palpitations, and unexplained weight loss. Many patients experience frustrating swings between the two. Dr. Maynard emphasizes that relying solely on TSH testing often provides an incomplete picture. Proper evaluation should include a full thyroid panel, antibody testing, vitamin D levels, adrenal stress assessment, and screening for gluten sensitivity or celiac disease. Because Hashimoto’s is driven by immune dysfunction, treatment should focus on identifying root causes such as chronic stress, blood sugar imbalance, inflammation, toxin exposure, or poor liver detoxification. Through targeted nutrition, stress reduction, detox support, and personalized care, patients can reduce symptoms and improve thyroid health long-term by addressing the underlying immune imbalance—not just managing numbers on a lab report.
