Monday 8/10/26: Colorado Eye Consultants & Your Health Matters with Dr. Shane Steadman

Today’s Guests:
After my very successful cataract surgery at Colorado Eye Consultants with Dr. Robert Fish, I decided we would introduce all of the Doctors at CEC, and let you know all of their specialties in eye care. Today we introduce Dr. Ameay Naravane who is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained glaucoma specialist. He specializes in medical and surgical management of glaucoma, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), routine and complex cataract surgery, and advanced anterior segment procedures, including intraocular lens exchange or repositioning, secondary intraocular lens implantation, and iris repair. Dr. Naravane completed his undergraduate studies at Georgetown University, where he focused on Science, Technology, and International Affairs. He earned his medical degree from the University of Minnesota and completed his internship at Hennepin Healthcare. He then returned to the Chief Resident. Following residency, Dr. Naravane completed a fellowship in Glaucoma and Advanced Anterior Segment Surgery at Washington University in St. Louis. During his fellowship, he gained extensive experience in advanced glaucoma procedures (including trabeculectomy, glaucoma drainage devices, and diode cyclophotocoagulation), MIGS techniques (such as goniotomy, GATT, Hydrus, iStent, and XEN Gel Stent), and complex anterior segment and cataract surgeries. Dr. Naravane is known for his compassionate, individualized approach to care. He partners with each patient to develop tailored treatment plans that integrate both time-tested methods and the latest innovations in ophthalmology. A committed educator, he takes the time to ensure his patients understand their diagnosis and options for care. Dr. Naravane is thrilled to call Colorado home and is passionate about delivering exceptional eye care to the Denver community.

Then it’s Your Health Matters, brought to you by Integrated Health Systems. Today Dr. Perry Maynard continues the topic of punch biopsy. Dr. Maynard shares a few recent patient stories where this testing was vital in finding out the root cause for the patients symptoms. Dr. Maynard explains one of the most effective ways to diagnose small fiber neuropathy is through a skin punch biopsy, a quick, minimally invasive procedure performed right in the doctor’s office. This specialized test uses a tiny 3-millimeter instrument—about the size of a pencil eraser—to remove a small sample of skin that can be analyzed for the density of the small nerve fibers responsible for sensing pain and temperature. Before the sample is taken, the area is numbed with a small injection of local anesthetic, so while patients may feel a brief sting from the numbing medicine, the procedure itself is typically well tolerated. No stitches are usually required, and the small biopsy site is simply covered with a bandage and allowed to heal naturally. The skin sample is then sent to a specialized laboratory where it is stained and examined under a microscope to count the tiny nerve endings. If the nerve fiber density is lower than normal, it provides strong evidence of small fiber neuropathy. This test is especially valuable for patients experiencing burning pain, tingling, numbness, or unusual sensations in their feet or legs when traditional nerve conduction studies and EMGs appear normal. A skin punch biopsy can provide the answers many patients have been searching for, allowing physicians to make a more accurate diagnosis and develop an appropriate treatment plan. On this edition of Your Health Matters, brought to you by Integrated Health Systems, Functional Nutritionist Elizabeth Mahnke discussed how nutrition plays a vital role in maintaining energy levels and why diet is often an overlooked cause of chronic fatigue. She explained that the foods we eat directly affect blood sugar stability, brain function, hormone production, and the body’s ability to create energy. Diets high in sugar and refined carbohydrates can cause rapid spikes and crashes in blood sugar, leading to brain fog, cravings, and afternoon fatigue. Elizabeth emphasized the importance of eating balanced meals that include quality protein, healthy fats, and fiber to provide steady, lasting energy throughout the day.

The conversation also highlighted several key nutrient deficiencies that commonly contribute to fatigue, including low iron, vitamin B12, folate, vitamin D, and magnesium. Staying well-hydrated and limiting ultra-processed foods can also improve energy while helping reduce inflammation throughout the body. Elizabeth encouraged listeners to focus on lean proteins, healthy fats, colorful fruits and vegetables, high-fiber carbohydrates, and adequate water intake as the foundation for better health. She also reminded listeners that persistent fatigue isn’t always caused by diet alone and may signal underlying medical conditions such as thyroid disorders, diabetes, sleep apnea, anemia, or other health concerns. When fatigue continues despite healthy lifestyle changes, a comprehensive medical evaluation and appropriate laboratory testing can help identify the root cause and guide effective treatment.
