While disinfection has played a critical role in protecting public health, researchers have spent decades studying the possible health effects associated with long-term exposure to certain disinfection byproducts.

During the program, Paul explained that some of the most studied DBPs, including trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs), have been linked in scientific studies to an increased risk of certain health concerns when exposure occurs over many years at elevated levels.
